Education, Skills and Knowledge Economy

HS2 East cities are home to some of the UK’s leading universities and higher education establishments. In a competitive global higher education marketplace, they need to keep innovating to be attractive to students from all over the world. Our knowledge economy is central to our future success and we need it to produce the high-skilled specialist graduates upon which so many of our knowledge-intensive and high-tech businesses depend.

The Leeds City Region has more STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) higher education students of any Local Enterprise Partnership area. Doncaster has been chosen as one of the locations for the government’s new high speed rail college and will produce a new pipeline of highly skilled workers to propel the UK's rail revolution.

HS2, both in its construction and ongoing operation, will directly provide jobs for our graduates and apprentices. It will also enable our world-class institutions to project themselves further afield, attract more students and continue to prosper. By boosting local businesses and encouraging new commercial opportunities, HS2 will also provide new ways for our knowledge economy to develop.
